The Jeonbuk Office of Education and Jeongeup City are simultaneously pushing for improvements in educational conditions and the restoration of historical and cultural resources in the Gobu-myeon area. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of an integrated school for Gobu Elementary and Middle Schools and the restoration of Gobu Gwan-ah at the Gobu Donghak Ulleem Center in Jeongeup on the 18th.
This agreement focuses on reorganizing Gobu Elementary and Middle Schools, which have faced operational difficulties due to a decrease in the number of students, into one integrated school, and restoring Gobu Gwan-ah, a historical site marking the beginning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
The integrated school will be newly established on the site of Gobu Middle School, with plans to improve the aging educational environment and develop it into an appropriately sized school. The Jeonbuk Office of Education decided on the project based on the educational validity of the integration and strong support from parents and local residents.
At the same time, the current site of Gobu Elementary School will be utilized as a restoration site for Gobu Gwan-ah, which was damaged during the Japanese colonial period. Gobu Gwan-ah holds significant meaning as the birthplace of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, initiated by Jeon Bong-jun in 1894, serving as a focal point for regional identity and historical education.
To ensure the stable progress of the project, the two organizations have agreed to establish a joint implementation consultation body and create a collaborative model that adequately reflects the opinions of the local community.
Jeongeup Mayor Lee Hak-soo stated, "The integration of Gobu Elementary and Middle Schools and the restoration of Gobu Gwan-ah are not just administrative agreements but historical turning points for redesigning the future of the region," adding, "We will definitely make the model of coexistence where education, culture, and community thrive together a success."
