The owl family is a nocturnal bird with large eyes, consisting of 221 species worldwide and 11 species in Korea. Due to their characteristic of keeping their eyes wide open even at night to protect their nests, they hold various symbolic meanings. In East Asia, including Korea, they are associated with wealth, and the expression "like an owl's barn" originated from here. In Greek mythology, they appear as the messenger of the goddess of wisdom, Athena, and in Roman mythology, as the goddess of wisdom, Minerva, symbolizing wisdom and honor in the Western world.
Among the owl family, the eagle owl represents these characteristics. The word "suri" means the head. When the names of mountains or peaks include "suri-bong" or "suri-san," the term "suri" is used when there are rocks attached to the top like a crown. The eagle owl is the largest among the owl species, with a body length of 66-70cm and a wingspan of 138-200cm. Their chicks are the first to hatch and enter the nest. The eagle owl is a rare species classified as a natural monument and a second-class endangered species.
In the cliffs of Donji Village on Gyeokhwado Island, an eagle owl chick has been in the nest for over a month. Currently, the mother is not constantly carrying the chick but guarding it nearby.
