The stork, a very rare winter bird belonging to the stork family, has recently been artificially propagated and released, and is now breeding in the wild. Among them, a pair has nested on an iron tower in Haengjung-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun.
The male, Deoksan (B95), was released from the Yesan release site in Chungnam in 2020, and the female, Garam (E67), is a stork born from the nest tower in Jangsin-ri, Chungnam in 2021.
Deoksan and Garam have nested again this year on the iron tower in Haengjung-ri, Buan-eup, following last year.
Storks do not change their mates once they pair up. Unless one of them undergoes a change, they spend their entire lives together.
So far, it has been found that they have nested in two places in our region. One is an iron tower in Gongeum-myeon, Gochang-gun, and the other is an iron tower in a rice field in Haengjung-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun. About a week ago, they started repairing the nest they used before and started mating.
The incubation period of the stork is 32-35 days, so if this couple successfully mates, we can expect to see cute chicks around early April.
