The Jeonju World Sori Festival Organizing Committee and the National Theater of Korea are holding an open audition for the main characters of the 2025 Sori Festival opening performance, "Sound Drama Shimcheong".
"Sound Drama Shimcheong" is a co-production of the Jeonju World Sori Festival and the National Changgeuk Company (Artistic Director Yoo Eun-sun). It will premiere at the Korean Sound Culture Hall as the opening performance of the 2025 Sori Festival on August 13th and 14th, and at the National Theater from September 3rd to 6th.
Through this audition, actors will be selected for the roles of 'Shimcheong', 'Old Woman Shimcheong', and 'Shimbongsa'. All three roles will be double cast, with the other actor for each role being cast from the National Changgeuk Company. The final selected actors will have the opportunity to perform alongside the members of the National Changgeuk Company.
The audition application period is from the 24th to April 2nd, and the second practical examination will be conducted on April 10th for those who pass the first document screening. More detailed information about the audition can be found on the Jeonju World Sori Festival website (https://www.sorifestival.com) and the National Theater website (www.ntok.go.kr).
In relation to this, the script and direction of the new work "Sound Drama Shimcheong" will be handled by Yona Kim, a director actively working in Europe, centered in Germany. She overturns the stereotypes embedded in the original text and portrays the protagonist 'Shimcheong' as a representative of all socially disadvantaged people in this land who were oppressed without their own unique voice and power, showing a completely different interpretation from before.
In addition, Han Seung-seok, who has been responsible for the music of many Changgeuk such as "Boheoja (步虛子): The Walker in the Void" and "Lear", will be in charge of the music, and Choi Woo-jung, who crosses various genres of music as well as experimental contemporary music, will be responsible for the composition. Also, a German creative team that has worked at world-renowned opera festivals will participate in stage art, presenting a groundbreaking and innovative work. It is also gathering expectations as a large-scale work with a total cast of over 130, including all members of the National Changgeuk Company.
