Amid growing concerns over damage to cultural heritage sites due to recent wildfires in the western Jeonbuk regions of Gimje, Jeongeup, and Gochang, the Jeonbuk Western Cultural Heritage Care Center, operated by the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Jeonbuk National University (Center Director Nam Hae-kyung), is receiving attention for its swift response.
Near the sites of the wildfires in Geumsan-myeon, Gimje, Soseong-myeon, Jeongeup, and Seongnae-myeon, Gochang, there were wooden structures and natural heritage sites vulnerable to fire, including the Gimje Wonpyeong Jipgangso Site, the Gochang Baekgwansu Teacher's House, and the Jeongeup Geumdong Zelkova Tree.
The center immediately dispatched to the scene after the outbreak of the wildfire, cooperating with fire authorities to inspect for heritage damage and implementing emergency protective measures such as spraying firefighting water on the roofs. In particular, ongoing monitoring is being carried out for the Jeongeup Geumdong Zelkova Tree.
In addition, the center is strengthening preventive measures such as purchasing fireproof sheets and inspecting fire facilities, and on the 19th, it conducted a joint fire drill at the Iksan Munsusa to check its disaster response capabilities.
The Jeonbuk Western Cultural Heritage Care Center manages 385 national heritage sites in the western Jeonbuk region and was selected as the best center in the 2024 National Heritage Administration evaluation for its response to the earthquake damage in Buan last year.
