On the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster on the 16th, the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province branch of the Democratic Party of Korea issued a statement commemorating the 304 victims, reaffirming their determination for truth-finding, holding those responsible accountable, and establishing a system for life safety.
Spokesperson Jeon Yong-tae stated in the released statement, "On April 16, 2014, 304 precious lives left us in the cold sea," and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and survivors who are still living with pain.
In particular, they mentioned the recent designation by the Maritime Tribunal of the Sewol Ferry disaster as a 'clear case of human error,' pointing out that despite this, the truth-finding process is being delayed, and accountability is not being properly enforced.
In this statement, the Jeonbuk branch defined the Sewol Ferry disaster as "a result of structural failure and irresponsibility where the country, which should protect the lives and safety of its people, failed to fulfill its duty," pledging to establish a thorough response system to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
The Democratic Party of Korea's Sewol Ferry Special Committee also stated that they will continue to pursue tasks such as truth-finding, holding those responsible accountable, commencing the construction of a life safety park, permanent preservation of the hull, establishment of a memorial park in Paengmok Harbor, and preservation of memorial spaces.
Finally, the Jeonbuk branch concluded by stating, "We will make every effort to create a society that prioritizes life and safety," and expressed sincere condolences to the 304 victims once again, offering heartfelt words of comfort to the bereaved families.
