Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province National Gugak Institute to Recruit Gugak Trainees in the Second Half of 2025

The Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province National Gugak Center (Director Yoo Young-dae, hereinafter referred to as the Gugak Center) is recruiting a large number of gugak (Korean traditional music) trainees after a hiatus of 5 years and 5 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and construction work on the main building.

The recruitment period is from June 10th to the 20th, and the training will take place at the Gugak Center application office (400 Gwansamdeuk-ro, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, Jeonbuk) from July 1st to December 19th for a duration of 6 months.

This gugak training program offers customized education in different levels - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - catering to gugak beginners to advanced learners who seek high-level skills. Anyone over the age of 9 (elementary school 4th grade or above for string and wind instruments) in the province can apply. The training program is designed for 6 months for beginners, 1 year for intermediate, and 3 years for advanced levels.

The recruitment fields include 13 subjects such as gayageum (12-stringed zither), gayageum byeongchang (gayageum ensemble), geomungo (six-stringed zither), danso (short bamboo flute), daegeum (large transverse bamboo flute), dance, minyo (folk song), sijo (traditional Korean poetry), ajaeng (seven-stringed zither), pansori (narrative singing), pansori gobeop (pansori singing technique), pungmul (folk music), haegeum (two-stringed fiddle), totaling 25 classes (14 daytime classes, 11 evening classes).

To apply for classes, one can visit the Gugak Center's official website (www.kukakwon.or.kr) to register as a member and check relevant information through the recruitment guidelines. Online applications are also possible. Additionally, visiting the Traditional Culture Experience and Inheritance Center (258 Jokyeongdan-ro, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju) allows for in-person registration assistance.

For this gugak training program, course syllabi for the 100 classes are provided to help applicants understand the content. Educational benefits are also available for seniors (born before July 1, 1960), people with disabilities, and veterans. More details can be found on the Gugak Center's website.
