The first independent publishing book fair in Jeonbuk, 'The 3rd Jeonju Book Pleasure', was successfully held from the 7th to the 8th at the Jeonju Southern Market Culture Square.
According to Jeonju City, this year's event saw participation from 92 teams including creators, publishers, and bookstores, attracting high interest with around 7,800 visitors including citizens and tourists in their 20s and 30s. Participating teams presented over 500 types of books for promotion and sale, as well as various programs such as lectures, experiences, and exhibitions.
The event kicked off with a citizen parade carrying flags on the first day, followed by an invitation to experts in sold-out editions at the 'Salon' and bookstore operators' talks. Outdoor activities included woodblock printing experiences and photo zone decorations, while the second day featured lectures by independent publishing planners and authors.
In the exhibition space, the Jeonju Publishing Support Project books, team representative works, and curated exhibitions attracted the attention of visitors. The city evaluated that through this event, Jeonju Book Pleasure confirmed the potential to leap beyond a regional book fair to a nationwide cultural event.
Participants also responded enthusiastically. Kang Dong-hoon, who runs a bookstore in Busan, said, "I came to the renowned Jeonju Book Pleasure, like a famous feast, to learn a lot as I want to organize a book fair in Busan" and added, "The cultural symbol of flags this year was particularly impressive."
Author Jo Bu-yong of 'Yumul Perspective', who participated for the third consecutive year, expressed, "After the book fair, I enjoy a workation in Jeonju, combining work and travel," and shared, "Jeonju Book Pleasure is an event awaited every year."
Kim Bo-ram, who operates a cafe at Jeonju Youth Mall, noted, "Seeing the entire Southern Market bustling with people during the event period makes me realize the positive impact Jeonju Book Pleasure has on the local economy."
A mother-daughter duo, Lee Soo-jin and Lee Hye-in, who attended the event, shared, "It was a special experience to meet independent publications rarely seen in large bookstores and hear authors' stories," expressing their desire to participate as authors someday.
Choi Hyun-chang, the head of Jeonju City Library, stated, "It was a festival that confirmed the hot interest in Jeonju's publishing history and independent publishing," and added, "I will actively support to ensure the continuous success of Jeonju Book Pleasure in the future."
