Growing Calls for Accountability as Dismissal of Cleaning and Security Workers at Gunsan Miryang Apartments Continues

As the struggle for the reinstatement of dismissed cleaning and security workers at the LH Gunsan Mijang Rental Apartments and the demand for recognition of the labor union have continued for nearly a year, the labor community in Jeollabuk-do strongly urged LH and the tenant representatives' meeting to take responsibility.

On the 11th, the "Jeollabuk Labor Solidarity from Below" stated in a press release, "Since the unilateral dismissal of cleaning and security workers due to a change in the apartment outsourcing company on July 16, 2024, these workers have been fighting against unfair dismissals" and criticized LH for avoiding responsibility, despite being the practical user and decision-maker.

The workers at the apartments joined the labor union immediately after their dismissal and demanded guarantees for union activities and equal treatment without discrimination. The fair payment of meal allowances, previously only given to office workers, was a major point of contention, along with the demand for ensuring labor union activities. As a result, at the end of June, a tentative collective agreement was reached with the participation of LH and the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

However, a new obstacle arose with the tenant representatives' meeting. According to the press release, "The tenant representatives' meeting opposed the signing of the collective agreement, leading to further obstacles in negotiations."

The Jeollabuk Labor Solidarity criticized the current situation where the rights of workers are being neglected in a structure where they do not legally exercise authority but practically do so, stating, "If there is a party exercising practical authority and approving collective agreements, they must also bear responsibility as users."

In particular, they addressed the tenant representatives' meeting, stating that unfair treatment exploiting the disadvantaged position of the other party is a form of 'bullying', and emphasized that the rights of labor unions do not conflict with the rights of tenants, calling for a society where they stand in solidarity with each other.

The Jeollabuk Labor Solidarity strongly urged LH and the tenant representatives' meeting not to evade responsibility any longer, but to recognize the labor union and respect the agreement.
