Jeonju World Sound Festival, Bringing the Essence of Traditional Music Together

The organizing committee of the Jeonju World Sound Festival (hereinafter referred to as the Sound Festival, chaired by Lee Wong-jun) presents a variety of performances that can be enjoyed by all generations, including traditional music, world music, classical music, popular music, and children's programs, under the keyword "Echoes from the Homeland."

■ From National Treasures to Rising Stars, a Joyful Vocal Performance
The representative branding performance of the Sound Festival, "Five Elements of Pansori," will be held from August 13 to 17 at 3 p.m. daily at the Yeonji Hall of the Korean Sound Culture Center. On the opening day, August 13 (Wednesday), Nam Sang-il, a renowned singer, will perform "Sugungga." On August 14 (Thursday), Lee Nan-cho will present "Heungboga," followed by Yoon Jin-chul's rendition of "Jeokbyeokga" on August 15 (Friday). Then, on August 16 (Saturday), Yeom Gyeong-ae will perform "Chunhyangga," and finally, on the last day, August 17 (Sunday), Kim Ju-ri will enchant the audience with "Simcheongga," marking the grand finale of the "Five Elements of Pansori" performance. Experience and compare the different tones and backgrounds of each performance to appreciate the depth and essence of traditional Pansori.

■ The Aesthetic of Sanjo, a Unique Blend of Improvisation and Order
On August 15 (Friday) at 4:30 p.m., the "Night of Sanjo" will unfold at the Yeonji Hall of the Korean Sound Culture Center. This stage will showcase the charm of Sanjo, characterized by improvisation and originality. Lee Ji-young, a master performer, will present the unique achievements of the Lee Ji-young style Gayageum Sanjo, maintaining the traditional order and aesthetics of Sanjo while infusing her distinctive creativity into the melodies and rhythms. Master performer Lee Yong-gu will showcase the Jeonchusan-style Danno Sanjo, overcoming the challenges of expressing the nuances of Sanjo through the instrument. Immerse yourself in the profound Sanjo performances of these two masters.

■ From Buddhist Music to Folk Songs, Gyeonggi Minyo, and Rural Sounds
As part of this year's ambitious lineup, the "Vocal Anthology" series offers a glimpse into the true essence of traditional vocal music. From August 15 (Friday) to 17 (Sunday) at 1:30 p.m. daily at the Yeonji Hall of the Korean Sound Culture Center, audiences can enjoy performances such as "Monk Donghee's Repertoire" on August 15 (Friday). Monk Donghee, who has dedicated over 70 years to preserving Buddhist music, will showcase his artistry and devotion to Buddhism on stage. On August 16 (Saturday), the audience can experience the subtleties and emotions of female vocal folk songs in "Cho Sun-ja's Female Vocal Songs," while on August 17 (Sunday), "Lee Chun-hee's Gyeonggi Minyo" will present a variety of Gyeonggi folk songs such as Seonyuga, Arirang, and Geumgangsan Taryeong. Additionally, on August 16 (Saturday) at 5 p.m., the sound of the ancestral Nongyo, restored through rural sounds from the Daejang Village in Geumgwa-myeon, Suncheon-gun, Jeollabuk-do, will resonate at the Nolimadang of the Korean Sound Culture Center.

■ A Stage Full of Passionate Young Vocalists
Don't miss the unique and passionate performances of the next generation of vocalists in the "Youthful Pansori Praise" stage! On August 13 (Wednesday) and 14 (Thursday) at 1:30 p.m. for two days at the Yeonji Hall of the Korean Sound Culture Center, audiences can witness the diverse performances of five talented vocalists selected through auditions. On August 13 (Wednesday), performances by Hwang Ji-young (Simcheongga), Ryu Chang-seon (Heungboga), and Kim Mi-seong (Chunhyangga) will take place, followed by Kim Ki-jin (Sugungga) and Lee Seo-hee (Jeokbyeokga) on August 14 (Thursday). Experience the beauty of our traditional sounds presented by these young vocalists and show them your generous support and applause.

■ Reinterpreting Gangneung Dan-oh-gut in a New Light
On August 15 (Friday) at 6:30 p.m., the "Poongnori" performance, a collaboration between Gangneung Dan-oh-je and the Jeonju World Sound Festival, awaits the audience at the Nolimadang of the Korean Sound Culture Center. "Poongnori" is a theatrical group created by nine inheritors of Gangneung Dan-oh-gut, incorporating various creative works based on the regional forms and elements of Gangneung Dan-oh-gut. On the Sound Festival stage, they will present the representative work "Guryongi Narsa," offering hopes and blessings through a reinterpretation of Gangneung Dan-oh-gut in a theatrical form.
