The 30th Busan International Film Festival has selected director Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave" as the opening film.
Park Chan-wook's new film "Decision to Leave," which is being presented after three years since "Decision to Leave" (2022), tells the story of a man named Mansu (played by Lee Byung-hun) whose life was satisfying enough to feel like he had achieved everything, but suddenly gets fired. To protect his wife and two children, and to safeguard the house he worked hard to acquire, Mansu prepares for his own war towards re-employment.
Actor Lee Byung-hun portrays Mansu, a job seeker starting a desperate battle for re-employment, while Son Ye-jin, a leading figure in the Korean film industry, delivers a powerful performance as his wife Miri, who steadfastly protects her family in the face of any crisis. Supported by trusted actors such as Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, and Cha Seung-won, the chemistry between the two lead actors who portray a married couple for the first time is highly anticipated. Based on dramatic development, unique mise-en-scène, and solid direction, the film depicts the desperate struggle of a character to protect his life and family. Director Park Chan-wook expressed deep affection for this film at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival, calling it "the story I most wanted to create."
Jeong Han-seok, the executive director of the Busan International Film Festival, expressed his excitement, saying, "I am thrilled and excited to think that this year, on the first day of the festival, we can watch the story that director Park Chan-wook most wanted to create with many audiences. I hope that the selection of this film as the opening film of the Busan International Film Festival will increase interest in this work, leading to a positive reception that extends to a broader interest in Korean cinema."
