The solo exhibition "Life: Car" by young sculptor Han Kang will be held at the alternative cultural space PlanC in Hanok Village in Jeonju for 10 days from the 11th to the 20th. The exhibition will feature various sculptural installations and video media works.
Sculptor Han Kang has previously expressed societal structures and emotions neutrally through forms like memorials and gravestones in his works. In "Life: Car," he aims to express emotional fatigue and exploitation through the repetition and excess of structures rather than autobiographical confessions, while also contemplating the potential of community.
The exhibition will feature ongoing related programs, with a dialogue program with the artist scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the 12th. The exhibition will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. without any scheduled closing days, and admission is free for all visitors.
This exhibition attempts to explore modern fan culture in an unfamiliar light by adopting the format of a "birthday cafe" from the 'fandom' culture, where fans who like a specific subject come together. It questions how the love and support of fans are structured and consumed within capital and systems.
The "birthday cafe" is an unofficial event where fans rent spaces like cafes to celebrate the birthdays of their favorite subjects. Unlike official events led by agencies, fans take charge of everything from planning, fundraising, merchandise production, to operation. Fans in this context function not just as mere consumers or passive spectators but as producers of new cultural content, fostering temporary yet strong bonds and a sense of community.
Based on his experience planning and operating an idol's birthday cafe in 2023, the artist decided on the format of this exhibition. Reflecting on the slight sense of competition and emptiness felt after the event, beyond pure support and celebration, he realized the variety of emotions involved.
In this exhibition, while maintaining the format of fan culture, the central figure, the 'ultimate favorite,' is replaced by the artist himself. In "Life: Car," the essential element of the 'favorite subject' in a birthday cafe is left vacant, with the artist's face replacing the 'ultimate favorite,' presenting slightly different and unfamiliar scenes compared to a typical birthday cafe.
Furthermore, after the exhibition ends, from August 29th to 3 days, a performance called "Fan: Fight" will be held in collaboration with the independent art festival Stayfoolish at the Youth Mall under Namboo Market (formerly Pungnyeon Bowl Mart). "Fan: Fight" adopts the format of a corporate-sponsored event, unlike the 'birthday cafe,' to reverse the structure of 'eventualized love.' However, the commodified interactions required to participate in a 'fan signing event' are removed, leaving only the sincerity of emotions.
