Professor Shin Dong-won from the Department of Science at Jeonbuk University has been awarded the 9th Amgok Academic Award for his contributions to research on traditional Korean science history and the publication of the series "Science and Civilization in Korea."

The Amgok Academic Award was established by Dr. Shin Seung-il, a life scientist, who donated it to Seoul National University in 2016 with the aim of establishing a new model of knowledge through the convergence of science and humanities. Since 2024, the award has been expanded to include external researchers, and Professor Shin is the first external recipient of the award.

Over the course of 12 years from 2010 to 2022, Professor Shin published a total of 30 volumes in Korean and 7 volumes in English for the series "Science and Civilization in Korea," contributing to the study of traditional science history. This year, he was also selected as a regular member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology.

On August 26th, he is scheduled to give a special lecture on "The Science of King Sejong and King Jeongjo" at the College of Humanities at Seoul National University. Professor Shin stated, "It is even more meaningful to receive an award that embodies the ideal of the convergence of science and humanities," and added, "I will promote the value of traditional Korean science to the world."
