- 2025 Jeonju World Sound Festival Summary (Part 1)
- From outdoor stage World Music to exciting dances over 3 days
- Capturing both artistry and popularity with indoor during the day and outdoor at night
The efforts of this year's Jeonju World Sound Festival to capture both artistry and popularity were answered by the "10,000 audience members."
During the day, the lineup was focused on indoor performances, while at night, outdoor performances were organized to offer a variety of shows that families could enjoy together, from children to adults.
From the 15th to the 17th, from 6:30 pm to around 10 pm each day at the Nolimadang of the Korean Sound Culture Hall, the festival decorated summer nights with a variety of music genres including traditional music, world music, and jazz through "Sound Summer Night." All performances were free to lower the entry barrier.
On the 15th, the group of nine performers, "Poongnuri," delivered wishes and blessings through a lively performance reinterpreting Gangneung Dan-oh gut, followed by the unique charm of traditional instruments presented by the Gwanak instrumental ensemble "Piri Band Jeckle," which created songs based on everyday themes like the flute, band, and mischief.
Through the Spain-focused performance "Folk Music of Vigoella," a lively folk music rich in the musical heritage of the Iberian Peninsula was showcased using traditional instruments like the Manchego guitar and the rebec, as well as everyday tools like frying pans and pots, creating a simple yet lively sound landscape. The day ended with the unique groove of the stage by "Inalchi," expanding the spectrum with distinctive musical colors, where everyone danced and enjoyed the festival together.
On the 16th, the first stage began with "Sunchang Nongyo Geumgwa Deulso-ri," which restored field songs sung in Geumgwa Village, Sunchang-gun. The precious sounds of ancestors, such as the sound of water and pounding, offered the audience a different musical experience. The performance of "Cypress ," which combines modern colors with traditional cypress music, was exciting and presented a fantastic and unfamiliar sound. The evaluation poured in for the Jazz vocalist Na Yoon-seon and pianist Bengzameng Musae duo, who shone brightly. The last performance of the day was by "Seodo Band," creating a sense of fusion by blending traditional music with pop styles.
On the festival's final day on the 17th, the Japanese youth group "Shibushi Chirimentaiko" presented the unique charm of drums with various sizes and shapes through Wadaiko. Additionally, "Brazil " mixed traditional and modern rhythms of Brazil such as funk, jazz, Afrobeat, and samba, delivering an intense groove with the combination of brass and percussion to the audience. The following performance by "Song So-hee" was a stage where she built and expanded her own musical world as a singer-songwriter.
The finale of the festival was decorated by "Aneunmi Company ." Choreographer and dancer Aneunmi captured the gestures of dancing grandmothers she met while traveling around the country, offering an experience of aesthetic dedication to historical gestures on stage. Especially commemorating the 80th anniversary of Liberation, the "Liberation Kids (born in 1945)" grandmothers from Jeollabuk-do took the stage with professional dancers, deeply conveying respect for community spirit and life, leaving a profound impact.
Kim Hee-sun, the executive director of the Sound Festival, said, "This year's festival made various attempts from the opening performance 'Shimcheong' to diverse world music, traditional music's overseas platform, and efforts to capture popularity." She added, "Next year's festival will strive to reach the audience in a more advanced way than this year."
