The voices calling for a safe permanent shutdown of the Hanbit Unit 1, which is nearing the end of its design life in December 2025, are growing louder. On the 15th, 100 days before the end of its lifespan, a "Goodbye Hanbit Unit 1" declaration ceremony was held at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Yeonggwang and Gochang, Jeollanam-do.

At the event, civic, religious, and environmental organizations such as the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant Response to Honam Region Joint Action, Won Buddhism Task Force for the Permanent Closure of the Yeonggwang Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant, and Religious Environmental Conference came together. They strongly condemned attempts to extend the lifespan of Unit 1, stating in a joint statement that such attempts, despite the imminent end of its design life, are an anachronistic idea that threatens national safety.

At the site, slogans such as "Close the door on Hanbit Unit 1 and give way to transmission lines for renewable energy!", "Preventing nuclear accidents is a practical choice, stop extending the lifespan!", and "Let's promote a just energy transition!" echoed. Despite the inclement weather, citizens in attendance reflected on the dangers of Hanbit Unit 1, which has been embroiled in constant safety controversies for the past 40 years, and resolved to say, "It's time to stop now."
