On the 18th, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province announced that it had submitted the Jeonju Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport's Metropolitan Transportation Committee.
This plan is intended to be included in the 5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan (2026-2030), with a total project cost of 2.1916 trillion won, of which 1.772 trillion won is expected to be supported by national funds.
The plan includes 15 core projects such as metropolitan roads and railways connecting Jeonju, Wanju, Gimje, Iksan, and Gunsan. Once finalized, it is expected to not only alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel speeds but also enable the establishment of a metropolitan living area that residents can experience.
Key projects include 10 radial metropolitan road routes in Jeonju (5 new, 5 expanded), an east-west axis metropolitan railway connecting Jeonju to Saemangeum with 1 route (9 stations), 2 public bus and freight depots, and 2 transfer centers.
The metropolitan road project covers a total length of 69 km, establishing and expanding arterial roads connecting Jeonju's outskirts and neighboring cities and counties to increase regional connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion with 4-6 lanes.
The metropolitan railway will operate 76 km from Jeonju Station to Saemangeum Waterfront City, connecting 9 hubs including Dongsan, Samnye, Dongiksan, Iksan, Namgunsan, and Saemangeum Airport Station.
Additionally, the construction of 2 public bus and freight depots will enhance the safety of public transportation and logistics, while transfer centers to be built at the KTX Iksan Station and the metropolitan railway Namgunsan Station will serve as transportation hubs linking railways, buses, taxis, and private cars organically to reduce transfer times and enhance convenience for users.
