In the cultural city of Jeonju, South Korea, a festival that allows visitors to see the past, present, and future of Hanji, a tradition that has been passed down for a thousand years, has opened its doors.
On the 2nd, Jeonju City and the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Foundation held the opening ceremony of the "2025 Jeonju International Hanji Industry Expo" (the 29th Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival) at a special stage at the Korean Traditional Culture Center. The event was attended by Mayor Woo Bum-gi of Jeonju, artisans and officials from around the country, citizens, and tourists, who all gathered to wish for the sustainable development and globalization of the K-Hanji industry.
During the opening ceremony, the 31st National Hanji Craft Competition awards ceremony was held, and a large-scale Hanji performance expressing hopes for the UNESCO listing of traditional Hanji as Intangible Cultural Heritage and the hosting of the Summer Olympics in Jeonju unfolded on stage. This was followed by an international Hanji fashion show showcasing creative costumes made from Hanji, demonstrating the modern transformation potential of traditional paper and adding a grand finale to the opening ceremony.
The Hanji Industry Expo, with the slogan "This is Hanji," will continue from the 2nd to the 4th at the Korean Traditional Culture Center. Various programs such as the Jeonju Hanji Sports Festival, Hanji Cultural Zone, Hanji Business Models, Hanji Night, and Hanji exhibitions, experiences, and sales will be prepared to inform citizens and tourists about the excellence, artistry, and industrial potential of Hanji.
