From January 27th to February 8th, a photo exhibition titled "Life" by photographer Yoo Baek-young will be held at the Seohakdong Photo Art Museum. This exhibition is composed of works that gaze at the essence of life that continues incessantly even in harsh conditions, rather than mourning disappearing things.
The exhibition captures moments of life that survive even in the harshest environments, such as flowers blooming in the crevices of cliffs, grass and dandelions on rural paths trodden countless times, and red apricot blossoms that withstand the harsh winter. Through this, the artist poses the question to the audience, "Where are we standing in the place of life right now?"
Yoo Baek-young started his photography career in 1981 after winning an award at the Korea Photographers Association contest, and has been observing the scene of records for over 40 years. Since 2001, he has been active as a photographer at the Korean Sound Culture Hall, capturing vivid moments of performing arts and participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In this exhibition, he unfolds the value of all existences that continue in a cycle under the theme of "Life."
Starting with nature photography, he has dedicated himself to performance photography and intangible cultural heritage records for over 20 years. In his photographs, elderly artists, disappearing spaces, and old places still exist as living beings in the present tense. His extensive records are being evaluated as important materials that can reinterpret regional culture and art history in the future.
Numerous awards such as the Jeonbuk Arts Council Award, Jeonju City Art Award, and Jeollabuk-do Photography Exhibition Grand Prize also attest to his long record of work. The consecutive special invitation exhibitions of the 5th, 10th, and 20th anniversaries of the Korean Sound Culture Hall's opening are also the result of his meticulous record-keeping.
