전북현대모터스FC(단장 이도현, 이하 전북현대)가 포르투갈 U16부터 U21까지 연령별 대표팀을 두루 거친 주앙 감보아를 영입, 중원을 강화했다.

전북현대는 7일 폴란드 프로축구 ‘포곤 슈체친’에서 활약했던 포르투갈 출신의 전천후 미드필더 주앙 감보아(João Pedro da Costa Gamboa/28세/187cm/MF)를 영입했다고 밝혔다.

주앙 감보아는 투지 넘치는 수비 스타일로 인터셉트와 압박 능력이 좋아 팀에 활력을 불어넣는 선수다.

특히 빠른 공격 전환과 수비 위치선정이 뛰어나고 많은 활동량을 바탕으로 적극적인 플레이가 강점이다.

전북현대는 홀딩형 미드필더 주앙 감보아 선수가 중원의 후방을 견고히 하고 2선 공격자원들이 더욱 공격적인 플레이에 집중할 수 있도록 힘을 보탤 것이라고 전했다.

포르투갈의 벤피카와 브라가에서 유스 시절을 보낸 주앙 감보아는 2015년 ‘브라가 B’에서 프로 데뷔를 시작으로 ‘SC 브라가(’15~17)’, ‘CS 마르티무(’17~19)’, ‘GD 샤베스(‘19~20)’, ‘GD 이스토릴 프라이아(’20~22)’ 등 포르투갈 리그 여러 팀에서 꾸준히 활약했다.

2022년에는 벨기에 주필러 리그 ‘아우트헤버를레이 뢰번’으로 이적해 유럽의 활동 무대를 넓혔고 이듬해 폴란드 ‘포곤 슈체친’으로 이적했다.

‘포곤 슈체친’에서 2시즌 동안 75경기를 출전하며 2골 4도움을 기록하는 등 팀의 핵심 자원으로 활약했다.

아시아 무대에 처음 도전하는 주앙 감보아는 “아시아에서의 첫 도전을 전북현대에서 할 수 있게 돼 기쁘고 기대가 크다“며 ”나는 항상 팀을 먼저 생각하고 그라운드에서는 열정을 쏟아내는 선수다. 하루빨리 팬들과 경기장에서 만나고 싶다“며 소감을 전했다.

한편, 주앙 감보아는 등번호 No.5를 부여받았으며 K리그 등록명은 ‘감보아’로 결정됐다.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC (Chairman Lee Do-hyun, hereinafter Jeonbuk Hyundai) has strengthened their midfield by acquiring João Gamboa, who has passed through the age group national teams from Portugal U16 to U21.

Jeonbuk Hyundai announced on the 7th that they have signed João Pedro da Costa Gamboa (28 years old, 187cm, MF), a versatile midfielder from Portugal who previously played for Poland's professional football club, Pogon Szczecin.

João Gamboa is a player who injects energy into the team with his spirited defensive style, excelling in interceptions and pressing abilities. His strengths lie in quick attacking transitions, excellent defensive positioning, and high work rate, enabling him to play aggressively.

Jeonbuk Hyundai stated that holding midfielder João Gamboa will solidify the team's midfield, allowing the second-line attackers to focus more on aggressive play.

Having spent his youth career at Benfica and Braga in Portugal, João Gamboa made his professional debut in 2015 with Braga B, followed by stints at SC Braga ('15-'17), CS Marítimo ('17-'19), GD Chaves ('19-'20), and GD Estoril Praia ('20-'22) in various Portuguese league teams.

In 2022, he moved to the Belgian First Division A with Royal Excel Mouscron, expanding his activities in Europe, before transferring to Pogon Szczecin in Poland the following year.

During his two seasons at Pogon Szczecin, he played 75 matches, scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists, establishing himself as a key asset for the team.

Embarking on his first challenge in Asia, João Gamboa expressed his excitement about joining Jeonbuk Hyundai, saying, "I am happy and have high expectations to start my first challenge in Asia with Jeonbuk Hyundai. I always prioritize the team and pour out my passion on the field. I can't wait to meet the fans and play in the stadium."

Furthermore, João Gamboa has been assigned the jersey number No. 5 and will be registered in the K League under the name 'Gamboa.'
