김 위원장은 국립국악원 국악연구실장을 역임하고 국민대학교 교수로 재직하면서 국악과 월드뮤직 전문가로 활발한 활동을 한 공로를 인정받았다.
특히, 전주세계소리축제 집행위원장과 국제전통음악학회 동아시아음악연구회장(ICTMDMEA chair)을 맡으며, 한국음악의 세계화에 힘쓰고, 한국 전통음악의 국제적 위상을 높인 공로를 높게 평가받았다.
