정읍시가 주도하는 ‘세계혁명도시 연대회의’가 올해로 4회를 맞아 국제적 행사로서의 위상을 굳건히 했다. 10일 정읍 연지아트홀에서 열린 컨퍼런스에는 독일, 일본, 브라질 등 세계 각국에서 농민봉기 역사를 공유하고 현대적 의미를 재조명하려는 도시들이 함께했다.

독일 뮐하우젠은 4년 연속 참여하며 연대의 중심을 지켰고, 일본 시마바라시와 브라질 바이아주의 카누두스가 처음으로 참가해 각자의 농민혁명 사례를 발표하며 관심을 모았다. 프랑스 혁명 당시 농민 저항사례까지 소개되며 자유와 평등을 위한 근대 농민혁명의 보편적 가치를 조명하는 시간이 이어졌다.

첫 번째 발표를 맡은 권의석 순천향대학교 교수는 “세계혁명도시 연대회의는 지역사의 세계화를 실현하는 장으로, 인류 보편의 정의를 위한 역사적 연대를 보여주는 사례”라고 평가했다.

이어 독일 뮐하우젠시의 안티에 슐롬스 박사와 낸시 크루그 관광재단 대표는 독일농민전쟁 500주년을 맞아 ‘1525, 자유의 해’를 주제로 도시의 역사관광 전략을 공유했다. 이들은 “당시 농민들이 외쳤던 자유의 개념은 오늘날 환경위기와 불평등의 시대에 더욱 절실하다”고 강조했다.

프랑스 농민 저항을 주제로 발표한 멜버른대 피터 맥피 교수는 프랑스혁명 속 농민들의 투쟁을 통해 자유의 가치를 생생히 전달했다.

일본 시마바라 봉기 사례를 소개한 고세키 가즈코 학예사는 “기독교 탄압과 농민의 저항이 결합된 시마바라 봉기는 처절하게 진압됐지만, 그 정신은 오늘날에도 살아 있다”고 말했다. 브라질 카누두스 봉기를 다룬 최금좌 한국외국어대 교수는 “카누두스는 종교의 자유와 공동체 수호를 위한 투쟁이었으며, 브라질 최대 내전으로 기록된다”고 밝혔다.

이학수 정읍시장은 “동학농민혁명은 인류 보편가치를 추구한 역사적 사건임을 이번 연대회의를 통해 재확인했다”며 “앞으로 이 연대회의를 세계화의 플랫폼으로 발전시켜 동학의 위상을 높이겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 행사 후 열린 진군행렬에서는 독일농민전쟁 500주년을 기념해 독일 농민군 복장을 재현한 행진이 포함돼 눈길을 끌었다. 전날인 9일에는 이학수 시장과 해외 연사들이 황토현 전적지를 찾아 전봉준 장군 동상에 헌화하며 혁명 정신을 기리는 시간도 가졌다.

The 'World Revolutionary City Alliance Conference,' led by Jeongeup City, marked its 4th year this year, solidifying its status as an international event. At the conference held at Jeongeup Yeonji Art Hall on the 10th, cities from around the world such as Germany, Japan, and Brazil came together to share the history of peasant uprisings and reevaluate their modern significance.

Germany's Muehlhausen participated for the 4th consecutive year, maintaining its central role in the alliance, while Japan's Shimabarashi and Brazil's Canudos participated for the first time, presenting their respective peasant revolution cases and attracting attention. The session continued to shed light on the universal values of modern peasant revolutions for freedom and equality, including examples of peasant resistance during the French Revolution.

Kwon Ui-seok, a professor at Soonchunhyang University who delivered the first presentation, evaluated the 'World Revolutionary City Alliance Conference' as "a stage for realizing the globalization of regional history and showing examples of historical solidarity for universal justice."

Following this, Dr. Antje Schloembs and Nancy Krueger, representing Muehlhausen, shared the city's historical tourism strategy under the theme of '1525, Year of Freedom' in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War. They emphasized, "The concept of freedom shouted by the peasants at that time is even more urgent in today's era of environmental crisis and inequality."

Professor Peter McFee from Melburne University, who presented on the topic of French peasant resistance, vividly conveyed the value of freedom through the struggles of peasants during the French Revolution.

Discussing the Shimabara uprising case in Japan, Kazuko Goseki, a historian, stated, "The Shimabara uprising, which combined Christian persecution and peasant resistance, was brutally suppressed, but its spirit lives on to this day." Professor Choi Geum-jwa from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, who covered the Canudos uprising in Brazil, highlighted, "Canudos was a struggle for religious freedom and community protection, recorded as Brazil's largest civil war."

Mayor Lee Hak-soo of Jeongeup said, "Through this alliance conference, we have reaffirmed that the Donghak Peasant Revolution is a historical event that pursued universal human values," and expressed his intention to further develop this conference into a platform for globalization and elevate the status of Donghak.

Furthermore, during the parade that followed the event, a march featuring the attire of the German peasant army in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War caught the eye. On the previous day, the 9th, Mayor Lee Hak-soo and foreign speakers visited the Hwangtohyeon Battlefield to pay tribute to General Jeon Bong-jun by laying wreaths, honoring the revolutionary spirit.
