The National Gugak Center is presenting a dramatic narrative that goes beyond the tragedy of the Korean War to express solidarity among local communities, human dignity, and compassion for life, set against the backdrop of Jirisan.
The National Gugak Center will showcase "The Song of the Cart," planned and produced as the representative Changgeuk of 2025, at the Yewondang stage from the 27th to the 29th of this month for three days.
"The Song of the Cart" is a creative Changgeuk that conveys a message of reconciliation, forgiveness, and recovery through the journey of a woman named Dokgap-i and her daughter Hwaseon-i, who wander along the valleys of Jirisan after losing the foundation of their lives in an era of endless war and conflict.
This performance was enhanced by the script by Professor Bae Sam-sik of the Korean National University of Arts Theater Institute, music direction by Professor Han Seung-seok of the Traditional Arts Department at Chung-Ang University, and the detailed depiction of emotions between the stage and characters by director Kim Jeong.
The three production team members, who have previously collaborated on other works, aimed to present "today's story derived from tradition" and sought to express the life and scenery of Namwon through the narrative and music of Changgeuk with "The Song of the Cart."
The story follows Dokgap-i and her daughter Hwaseon-i as they navigate through the valleys of Jirisan, where eight sons scattered and live, interspersed with mythical beings like goblins and spirits, stimulating the imagination and dynamically portraying motherhood, reconciliation, and the dignity of life amidst the wounds of war.
The National Gugak Center stated, "The 'The Song of the Cart' is a stage born in the space of Namwon and Jirisan, presenting new possibilities for traditional performing arts," and expressed hope to share the value of Changgeuk that connects regions, traditions, and communities through this performance.
Bang Su-mi (Dokgap-i), Seo Jin-hee (Hwaseon-i), Kim Eun-seok (Geosik-i), Go Jun-seok (Imae), and Choi Kwang-kyun (Mangnyang) are starring in the performance.
Artistic Director Yoo Su-jeong expressed hopes that the time spent laughing, crying, and comforting each other through the story, and the emotions and breath of each character will naturally be conveyed on stage.
