– 전시 《CHARACT-ER》, 전주 서신갤러리 별관에서 7월 6일까지 개최

전주의 대표 예술 공간 중 하나인 서신갤러리 별관에서 청년 시각 예술 작가 8인의 실험적인 전시 《CHARACT-ER》 전이 6월 11일부터 7월 6일까지 3주간 개최된다. 전시는 오후 1시부터 6시까지 무료로 관람할 수 있으며, 매주 월요일과 화요일은 휴관한다.

이번 전시는 박현진 작가의 기획으로, 전북 지역에서 활동 중인 김의진, 김한비, 노진아, 박현진, 이길빈다, 조민지, 최혁, 한준 등 8명의 청년 작가들이 참여했다. 서양화, 한국화, 설치미술, 그래피티 기반 회화, 산업 재료를 활용한 조형 작업 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 통해 이들이 정의한 ‘캐릭터(character)’를 새롭게 탐색한다.

‘CHARACT-ER’라는 전시 제목은 ‘character(캐릭터)’라는 단어의 어근과 주체를 의미하는 접미사 ‘-er’를 시각적으로 분리해 제시함으로써, 단순한 개성이나 인물의 표현을 넘어 그것을 ‘만들고, 살아가는 존재로서의 자아’에 주목한다.

기획자 박현진은 “이 전시는 우리가 사회 속에서 만들어낸 정체성과 역할, 즉 ‘행하는 존재’로서의 캐릭터를 탐구한다”고 밝혔다.

전시에 참여한 작가들은 각자의 선택과 경험, 고민의 궤적을 다양한 방식으로 시각화했다. 일상 속 자아의 조각을 표현하거나, 사회적 역할과 욕망 사이의 균형을 조형화하며, ‘캐릭터’라는 개념을 새롭게 해석한 것이 특징이다.

또한, 이번 전시의 또 다른 주목할 점은 각 작가들이 자신의 작업과 개성을 반영해 직접 제작한 ‘로고 이미지’다. 이는 작가 개인이 하나의 브랜드처럼 존재한다는 점을 시각적으로 드러내며, 예술가로서의 정체성과 자아를 표현하는 장치로 작동한다. 박현진 작가는 이를 통해 “작품 외의 요소들을 통해 작가의 캐릭터가 보다 직관적으로 전달되길 바랐다”고 설명했다.

이번 전시는 과잉 정보 시대 속에서 개성이 단순한 특질을 넘어 ‘삶의 무기’가 되는 현실에 주목한다. 전시장을 찾은 관람자들은 각 작품 앞에서 작가들이 지나온 선택의 궤도를 마주하게 되며, 동시에 자신의 삶과 정체성을 되돌아보는 성찰의 기회를 갖게 된다.

박현진 기획자는 “마트에 갈지 말지, 가난하지만 꿈을 향해 갈지, 아니면 안정적인 삶을 택할지 등 각자가 지나온 선택의 결과가 현재의 우리를 만들었다”며 “때론 후회되는 결정도 있지만, 모두가 평안을 바라는 마음에서 비롯된 최선의 흔적이었고, 그 흔적을 통해 스스로를 위로받길 바란다”고 말했다.

The experimental exhibition "CHARACT-ER" featuring 8 young visual artists will be held at the Seosin Gallery Annex, one of Jeonju's representative art spaces, from June 11 to July 6 for a period of 3 weeks. The exhibition will be open for free viewing from 1 pm to 6 pm, with closures on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Organized by artist Park Hyun-jin, the exhibition features the participation of 8 young artists active in the Jeollabuk-do region, including Kim Ui-jin, Kim Han-bi, No Jin-a, Park Hyun-jin, Lee Gil-bida, Jo Min-ji, Choi Hyeok, and Han Jun. Through a variety of genres such as Western painting, Korean painting, installation art, graffiti-based painting, and sculptural works utilizing industrial materials, the artists explore the 'characters' they have defined in a new light.

The exhibition title "CHARACT-ER" visually separates the root of the word 'character' and the suffix '-er,' which signifies the subject, going beyond simple expressions of individuality or personality to focus on the 'self as a being that creates and lives.'

Park Hyun-jin, the organizer, stated, "This exhibition explores the 'character' as an 'acting being,' which we have constructed in society."

The participating artists visualized their choices, experiences, and contemplations in various ways. They express fragments of the self in daily life, sculpt the balance between social roles and desires, and offer new interpretations of the concept of 'character.'

Another notable aspect of this exhibition is the 'logo images' created directly by each artist reflecting their works and personalities. This visually reveals the artist's presence as a brand, functioning as a device to express the artist's identity and self as an artist. Park Hyun-jin explained, "Through this, I hoped that the artist's character could be conveyed more intuitively through elements other than the artwork."

This exhibition focuses on how individuality transcends mere traits in the age of information overload, becoming a 'weapon of life.' Visitors to the exhibition will confront the trajectories of choices the artists have made in front of each artwork, providing an opportunity for reflection on their own lives and identities.

Park Hyun-jin, the organizer, said, "Whether to go to the mart, pursue dreams despite poverty, or choose a stable life, each person's past choices have shaped who we are today," adding, "There may be decisions that we regret, but they were all traces born from a desire for peace, and I hope that through these traces, individuals can find solace in themselves."
