제30회 부산국제영화제 '올해의 아시아영화인상(The Asian Filmmaker of the Year)' 수상자로 이란의 거장 자파르 파나히 감독이 선정됐다.

제30회 부산국제영화제는 ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’ 수상자로 자파르 파나히 감독을 선정했다. '올해의 아시아영화인상'은 매해 아시아 영화 산업과 문화 발전에 있어 가장 두드러진 활동을 보인 아시아의 영화인 또는 단체에 수여하는 상이다.

이란의 대표적인 거장 자파르 파나히 감독은 검열과 억압 속에 살아가는 개인의 자유와 존재를 조명해왔다. 반체제적 시선으로 이란 사회의 정치·사회적 모순을 날카롭게 포착해온 그는 수차례 체포와 구금, 가택연금, 영화 제작 금지, 출국 금지 등 탄압을 받으면서도 비밀리에 영화를 제작해 해외 영화제에 출품하며 창작의 끈을 놓지 않았다. 베니스국제영화제 황금사자상 <써클>(2002), 베를린국제영화제 황금곰상 <택시>(2015)에 이어 (2025)로 2025 칸영화제 황금종려상을 받으며 세계 3대 영화제를 모두 석권했다. 다양한 작품들을 통해 전세계에 깊은 울림을 전한 자파르 파나히 감독은 억압에 맞서 자신의 신념을 꺽지 않는 저항의 표상이자 역사의 산증인이다.

자파르 파나히 감독은 ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’ 선정 소감으로 “이란에서 영화를 만든다는 것이 날마다 더 어려워지는 이 시기에, 이 상은 영화가 여전히 국경과 언어, 그리고 그 어떤 한계도 넘어설 수 있는 힘을 가졌다는 사실을 다시금 깨닫게 합니다”라며 “이 상은 개인으로 받는 것이 아니라, 침묵 속에서, 망명 중에, 혹은 압박 속에서도 창작을 멈추지 않는 모든 이들을 대신해 받는 것이라고 생각합니다”라고 밝혔다.

‘올해의 아시아영화인상’은 9월 17일 영화의전당에서 열리는 개막식에서 수여할 예정이다.

Iranian master filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been selected as the recipient of the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival has chosen Jafar Panahi as the recipient of the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' award. This award is presented annually to an outstanding Asian filmmaker or organization that has made significant contributions to the development of the Asian film industry and culture.

Jafar Panahi, a prominent figure in Iran, has shed light on individual freedom and existence under censorship and oppression. Through his anti-establishment perspective, he sharply captures the political and social contradictions in Iranian society. Despite facing multiple arrests, imprisonment, house arrest, bans on filmmaking, and travel restrictions, he has continued to clandestinely produce films and submit them to international film festivals, never letting go of his creative spirit. Following his Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for "The Circle" (2002) and the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for "Taxi" (2015), he received the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival for "It Was Just an Accident" (2025), thus conquering the three major film festivals in the world. Jafar Panahi, who has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide through his diverse works, is a symbol of resistance against oppression and a witness to history.

In response to being selected for the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' award, Jafar Panahi expressed, "In this era where making films in Iran becomes increasingly difficult every day, this award reminds us of the fact that cinema still has the power to transcend borders, languages, and any limits." He further stated, "I believe this award is not for me as an individual, but on behalf of all those who continue to create amidst silence, exile, or pressure, without stopping."

The 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the festival at the Busan Cinema Center on September 17th.
