전주세계소리축제의 대표 프로그램이자 공모형 쇼케이스 ‘소리프론티어’에서 최종 1위로 선정된 ‘우리음악집단 소옥’이 9일부터 유럽 초청 공연에 나선다.

소리축제는 올해 문화체육관광부와 (재)예술경영지원센터가 주관하는 ‘장르별 시장 거점화 지원 사업’에 전통 장르 대표 축제로 선정되었으며, 이에 따라 2025 소리프론티어는 공연예술 유통지원사업 ‘소리 넥스트’의 일환으로 추진됐다. 이는 소리축제 기간 중 진행된 국내 경연을 넘어 해외 무대 진출까지 연계되는 첫 사례로, 창작자 지원 모델로서 의미를 더한다.

2010년부터 시작된 소리프론티어는 올해로 15회째를 맞이했으며, 지금까지 총 43개 팀을 발굴해왔다. 선정된 팀들은 말레이시아 ‘페낭 재즈페스티벌’, 일본 ‘스키야키 미츠 더 월드’ 등 해외 주요 무대에 소개되며 신진 아티스트 발굴과 국제 교류의 장을 넓혀왔다.

올해 소리프론티어는 6월 공개 모집으로 시작해 7월 예선 실연 심사, 2박 3일 합숙 워크숍 ‘슈퍼위크’, 최종 경연을 거쳐 진행됐다. 합숙 과정에서는 국내외 음악시장 전문가 특강, 팀별 무대 전략 피드백, 멘토링 등이 진행되어 단순 경연을 넘어 창작 역량을 강화하는 기회가 제공됐다.

최종 심사에는 천재현 소리프론티어 예술감독을 비롯해 계명국 자라섬재즈페스티벌 감독, 이수정 DMZ 피스트레인 뮤직페스티벌 예술감독, 바네사 첸(대만 국립가오슝아트센터), 레이첼 쿠퍼(아시아 소사이어티), 클라우디아 발라델리(캐나다 아쉐 월드페스트) 등 국내외 최고 수준의 전문가가 참여하며 심사의 공정성과 전문성, 국제적 신뢰도를 한층 높였다. 이들은 소옥이 전통 기반의 음악을 현대적으로 확장하면서도 국제무대에서 충분히 통할 수 있는 완성도를 갖췄다고 평가하며 최종 우승을 결정했다.

최종 선정된 소옥은 9일 헝가리 미슈콜츠에서 열리는 ‘세종학당 개원 기념 한국문화축제’를 시작으로, 11일 불가리아 블라고에브그라드 시청 공식 초청 공연, 13일 플로브디프 국립예술원 콘서트홀 초청 무대에 오른다.

이번 공연은 각 도시와 주요 기관이 주최하는 공식 행사로, 세종학당 개원 기념 공연은 헝가리 내 한국문화 확산과 직결되는 의미 있는 무대이며, 블라고에브그라드 공연은 시청이 직접 주최하고 현지 대표 예술단체인 피린 앙상블이 환영 무대를 마련해 교류의 의미를 더한다. 또한 플로브디프 공연은 ‘소피아 뮤직위크’와 국립예술원 공동 주최로 진행되며, 특히 이번 투어에서는 한국 전통악기 아쟁이 불가리아에서 처음으로 소개된다는 점도 주목할만하다.

이번 무대에서 소옥은 ‘나무와 나무 사이’, ‘나비의 춤’, ‘소옥풍류’, ‘바다’, ‘별의 정원’, ‘해가 들다’, ‘달을 몰다’ 등 주요 창작 레퍼토리를 선보인다. 전통의 결을 지키면서도 새로운 감각을 담은 작품들이 유럽 관객에게 소개되며, 현지 음악인들과의 협연을 통해 한국 창작음악의 가능성을 보여줄 예정이다.

김희선 소리축제 집행위원장은 “소리프론티어는 단순한 경연 프로그램을 넘어, 공모와 멘토링, 최종 무대, 그리고 해외 진출까지 이어지는 창작자 지원 모델”이라며 “세종학당, 시청, 국립예술원 등 주요 현장에서 한국 창작음악을 공식적으로 소개하게 된 것은 큰 성과”라고 밝혔다.

The representative program of the Jeonju World Sound Festival and the competitive showcase 'Sound Frontier', where the final winner 'Our Music Group Soeok' was selected as the 1st place, will embark on a European invitation performance starting from the 9th.

This sound festival was selected as a traditional genre representative festival for this year's 'Genre-specific Market Hub Support Project' organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Management Support Center, and as a result, the 2025 Sound Frontier was launched as part of the performance art distribution support project 'Sound Next'. This is the first case that connects domestic competitions during the sound festival period to overseas stages, adding significance as a creator support model.

Started in 2010, the Sound Frontier is celebrating its 15th edition this year and has discovered a total of 43 teams so far. The selected teams have been introduced to major overseas stages such as the Malaysia 'Penang Jazz Festival' and Japan's 'Skiyaqui Mits The World', expanding the platform for discovering new artists and international exchanges.

This year's Sound Frontier started with a public recruitment in June, followed by a July preliminary performance evaluation, a 2-night 3-day residency workshop 'Super Week', and the final competition. During the residency process, there were special lectures by domestic and international music market experts, feedback on stage strategies for each team, mentoring sessions, providing an opportunity to enhance creative capabilities beyond a simple competition.

The final evaluation included top-notch domestic and international experts such as Cheon Jae-hyun, Sound Frontier Artistic Director, Gye Myeong-guk, Director of the Jarasum Jazz Festival, Lee Su-jeong, Artistic Director of the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival, Vanessa Chen (National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, Taiwan), Rachel Cooper (Asia Society), Claudia Balladelli (Canada's Ash World Fest), enhancing the fairness, expertise, and international credibility of the evaluation. They evaluated that Soeok has achieved a level of completion that can resonate well on the international stage while expanding traditional-based music in a modern way, leading to their final victory.

The selected Soeok will perform starting from the 9th at the 'Sejong Hakdang Opening Commemorative Korean Culture Festival' in Miskolc, Hungary, followed by an official invitation performance at the Blagoevgrad City Hall in Bulgaria on the 11th, and a stage invitation at the Plovdiv National Art Institute Concert Hall on the 13th.

This performance is an official event hosted by each city and major institution, with the Sejong Hakdang opening performance holding significant meaning related to the spread of Korean culture in Hungary, the Blagoevgrad performance being directly hosted by the city hall and featuring a welcoming stage by the local representative art group, the Pirin Ensemble, further enhancing the exchange. Additionally, the Plovdiv performance is jointly hosted by 'Sofia Music Week' and the National Art Institute, and notably, in this tour, the Korean traditional instrument, Ajaeng, will be introduced for the first time in Bulgaria.

During this stage, Soeok will present major creative repertoires such as 'Between Trees', 'Butterfly Dance', 'Soeok Style', 'Sea', 'Garden of Stars', 'Sunrise', 'Moonlight', etc. Works that preserve the essence of tradition while incorporating new sensibilities will be introduced to European audiences, showcasing the potential of Korean creative music through collaborations with local musicians.

Kim Hee-sun, Executive Director of the Sound Festival, stated, "Sound Frontier is a creator support model that goes beyond a simple competition program, encompassing recruitment, mentoring, final stage, and overseas expansion," and emphasized, "The official introduction of Korean creative music in major venues such as Sejong Hakdang, city halls, and the National Art Institute is a significant achievement."
