국립민속국악원은 28일 2026년도 공연 사업계획을 발표하며 비전 ‘국민과 세계가 함께 누리는 국립민속국악원’ 실현을 위한 추진 방향을 제시했다.
올해 국악을 기반으로 대중과의 접점을 넓히는 ‘공공 전통예술 플랫폼’ 역할을 강화, 이를 통해 국악의 현대화·대중화·세계화를 이끄는 대표 기관으로 도약할 계획이다.

먼저 예원당 객석 환경 개선 일정에 맞춰 공연 운영의 연속성을 확보하고, 제작·기획·확산이 유기적으로 이어지도록 운영체계를 고도화한다. 관람 환경 개선은 설계(3~5월)와 공사(8~12월)를 단계적으로 추진해 보다 안전하고 쾌적한 관람 여건을 조성할 계획이며, 상반기에는 예원당 중심의 제작·기획 역량을 집중하고 하반기에는 지역 현장과 외부 무대 중심의 확산을 강화해 사업의 효율성과 관객 접점을 함께 높일 방침이다.

대표 콘텐츠 제작 역량도 한층 강화한다. 대표창극 〈춘향〉을 새롭게 제작해 4월 24일부터 26일까지 예원당에서 총 3회 선보인다. 판소리 ‘춘향가’의 핵심 대목을 바탕으로 서사와 음악의 완성도를 끌어올려 동시대 관객과의 공감대를 확장하고, 창극 특성화 기관으로서 대표 레퍼토리 경쟁력을 한층 강화할 계획이다.

상설·기획공연 운영도 내실 있게 확대한다. 〈광한루원 음악회〉(총 16회), 〈K-국악 스테이지〉(총 17회), 〈다담〉(연 5회), 〈소리 판〉(총 6회) 등을 운영하고, 설날·신년 공연과 지역축제 연계 공연, 대외협력공연도 연중 추진해 공공 공연의 역할과 관객 접점을 확대한다.

지역 공연 확산은 〈국악을 국민속으로〉를 중심으로 더욱 폭넓게 추진한다. 3작품·14회 규모로 운영하며, 경기 용인·광명, 경북 예천, 경남 김해, 충북 진천, 전남 영광·완도 등 전국 7개 지역에서 〈강강숲에 떨어진 달님〉, 〈숲속음악대 덩따쿵〉, 〈별이와 무지개다리〉를 선보일 계획이다. 또한 작년 대표창극 〈독갑이댁 수레노래〉는 국립극장 교류공연을 통해 관객과의 만남을 확대할 예정이다.

교육·체험·연구 분야는 국민 체감도를 높이는 방향으로 내실을 다진다. 청소년·일반인·소외계층을 아우르는 수요자 맞춤형 프로그램을 연중 운영하고, 공연 성과를 기반으로 아카이빙을 강화하는 한편 지역 기관·대학과 연계한 민속음악 연구자료 축적도 확대한다. 전시·체험 콘텐츠 역시 운영 품질을 고도화해 공공 문화서비스의 접근성과 만족도를 함께 높일 방침이다.

국제 교류도 단계적으로 추진한다. 7월에는 일본 오사카와 오키나와에서 각각 1회 공연을 추진해 현지 관객과의 접점을 넓힌다. 중국과의 교류는 양국 정상 간 문화 교류 확대 기조에 맞춰 중국 중앙정부 및 문화예술 협력기관과 협의를 이어가며, 전통예술 분야 공연·포럼 등 교류 과제의 추진 방향을 구체화할 예정이다.

김중현 원장은 “2026년 국립민속국악원은 전통의 본질을 지키되 관객과 시대가 공감하는 방식으로 확장해, ‘국민과 세계가 함께 누리는’ 국악의 가치를 높여가겠다”며 “대표창극 제작과 상설·기획공연 확대, 지역 확산, 객석 환경 개선, 국제 문화 교류를 차질 없이 추진해 국민이 체감할 수 있는 문화서비스 품질을 높이고, 세계인에게 K-국악을 알리겠다”고 밝혔다.

The National Gugak Center announced its performance business plan for the year 2026 on the 28th, presenting the direction for realizing the vision of "National Gugak Center enjoyed by the people and the world together." The plan is to strengthen its role as a "public traditional arts platform" that expands its connection with the public based on traditional Korean music, leading the modernization, popularization, and globalization of Korean music.

Firstly, in line with the schedule for improving the audience environment at the Yeakdang Hall, they will ensure the continuity of performances and enhance the operational system to organically link production, planning, and dissemination. They plan to gradually improve the viewing environment through design (March-May) and construction (August-December) to create a safer and more pleasant viewing condition. In the first half of the year, they will focus on production and planning centered around Yeakdang, and in the second half, they will strengthen the expansion focusing on local venues and external stages to increase the efficiency of operations and audience interaction.

They will also enhance the capacity for producing representative contents. They will newly produce the representative changgeuk "Chunhyang" and present it three times at Yeakdang from April 24th to 26th. Based on the core scenes of the pansori "Chunhyangga," they will enhance the completeness of the narrative and music to expand the empathy with contemporary audiences and further strengthen the competitiveness of the center as a representative repertoire of changgeuk.

They will also expand the operation of regular and planned performances. They will operate events such as the "Gwanghanruwon Concert" (16 times), "K-Gugak Stage" (17 times), "Dadam" (5 times a year), and "Sori Pan" (6 times), and will conduct performances related to Lunar New Year, New Year, regional festivals, and external cooperation performances throughout the year to expand the role of public performances and audience interaction.

The expansion of regional performances will be further promoted with a focus on "Korean music into the people." They will operate with three works and 14 performances, presenting "The Moon Fallen in the River," "The Drum Sound in the Forest," and "The Star and the Rainbow Bridge" in seven regions nationwide, including Yongin and Gwangmyeong in Gyeonggi, Yecheon in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gimhae in Gyeongsangnam-do, Jincheon in Chungcheongbuk-do, and Yeonggwang and Wando in Jeollanam-do. Additionally, last year's representative changgeuk "Dokgap's Carriage Song" will be expanded through exchanges with the National Theater to meet with more audiences.

In the field of education, experience, and research, they will deepen their efforts in a direction that enhances the public's perception. They will operate customized programs for youth, the general public, and marginalized groups throughout the year, strengthen archiving based on performance outcomes, and expand the accumulation of folk music research materials in collaboration with local institutions and universities. They also plan to enhance the quality of exhibition and experience contents to increase the accessibility and satisfaction of public cultural services.

International exchanges will also be carried out gradually. In July, they will hold one performance each in Osaka and Okinawa, Japan to expand connections with local audiences. In line with the trend of expanding cultural exchanges between the two countries' leaders, they will continue discussions with the Chinese central government and cultural and arts cooperation agencies to solidify the direction of exchange tasks in the field of traditional arts performances and forums.

Director Kim Jung-hyun stated, "In 2026, the National Gugak Center will preserve the essence of tradition while expanding in a way that resonates with the audience and the times, elevating the value of Korean music enjoyed by the people and the world together." He also expressed, "We will advance without interruption in producing representative changgeuk, expanding regular and planned performances, regional dissemination, audience environment improvement, and international cultural exchanges to enhance the cultural service quality that the people can feel and introduce K-Gugak to the world."
