In relation to the 'Red Card Incident' that occurred at M Elementary School in Jeonju in 2021, the parent of the victim, Mr. A, has released a statement to the media. Mr. A denounced the emotional abuse and unfair treatment within the school, stating that he wrote this article in the hope that there would be no more victims like his child. Regarding the opinion expressed by the North Jeolla Province Office of Education on December 4th last year that the red card teacher did not infringe on human rights, Mr. A refuted, "The North Jeolla Province Office of Education claimed to have expressed its opinion based on the provisions of the ordinance, but this is nothing more than a simple opinion on the decision of the Student Human Rights Committee. The superintendent does not have the authority to overturn the decision itself."
Mr. A strongly criticized, arguing that "This is an anti-human rights act trying to damage the value of student rights established during the tenure of former Superintendent Kim Seung-hwan, just as the Yoon Seok-yeol government tried to erase the policies and values of the former Moon Jae-in government."
The Student Human Rights Committee during Superintendent Kim Seung-hwan's tenure judged the incident as a violation of human rights, while during Superintendent Seo Geo-seok's tenure, an opinion was presented to overturn this. Mr. A expressed the following position on this.
"Drinking water gets you in trouble": oppressive environment in the classroom
Mr. A claimed, "The homeroom teacher repeatedly told our child, 'If you drink water, you'll get in trouble,' 'You can't go to the bathroom,' and imposed sanctions on a daily basis." Also, the child "waited for the red card punishment with his heels raised and his hands gathered behind him," and this punishment method caused severe fear and stress to the child.
Mr. A expressed, "The school should be a place that gives children the joy and happiness of learning, but for our child, that classroom was 'hell'." He emphasized that the school did not respect the physical and mental rights of the child, criticizing the punishment-centered operation method.
"I want to be a lion": the child's psychological trauma
Mr. A revealed the results of his child's psychological test, stating that the child wrote, "I want to be a lion, I think it won't be unfair." This reveals deep anger and helplessness stemming from the oppressive environment from the homeroom teacher. This case shows that the unfairness felt by a young student in the power structure led to psychological conflict, pointing out that it has a serious impact on the child's mental health beyond a simple learning environment problem.
According to the North Jeolla Education Newspaper, there are six victim students confirmed by the parents' confirmation. The child of Parent B also appealed for pain, saying, "Mom, when you sleep, I tried to fall from *** every night." Unfounded attacks on parents can only worsen the situation of the victim students.
And Parent A also expressed his position on the content of the broadcast media coverage related to M School so far.
Regarding the claim that the transfer of teachers was due to parents' complaints
Regarding the situation where 6 out of 7 teachers at M Elementary School were transferred, Mr. A refuted by providing specific evidence. According to Mr. A's claim, “The science teacher and first-grade homeroom teacher who were transferred on March 1, 2024, had completed their three-year term, and the second-grade homeroom teacher was transferred on March 1, 2024, but due to personal circumstances after two years of work, the third-grade homeroom teacher got married in January 2023 and exchanged with another city and transferred after two years of work."
The fourth-grade homeroom teacher was transferred on March 1, 2024, and worked for two years at a nearby school for the convenience of childcare and commuting due to the return of her spouse's childcare leave, and the sixth-grade homeroom teacher was listed in the internal order of another city on March 1, 2023, and hoped to be transferred to another city on March 1, 2024, and was transferred to the desired area. The fifth-grade homeroom teacher is currently in charge of the fourth grade as a research director in the 2024 school year and is in her third year of work, and is scheduled to be transferred on March 1, 2025.
Mr. A stated, "If you look at the reasons for the transfer, most of them occurred for personal reasons such as expiration of the term of office, marriage, promotion points, spouse-related circumstances," and "This is a choice made within the individual's authority."
In other words, "The interpretation that the desire for transfer originated from specific conflicts or problems with parents A and B (transfer of children) is excessive speculation and clear dissemination of false facts and defamation," he claimed.
"The banner triggered a relapse of PTSD"
Mr. A claimed that the illegal banners posted near the school from September to November 2024 triggered a relapse of his child's PTSD. The banners included content criticizing Mr. A and his child, and as a result, the child had to start drug treatment again.
"The red and yellow banners hung in front of the school were insults and criticisms targeting our family. The school ignored this situation and turned a blind eye to our family's pain." He pointed out that this worked to exacerbate the situation rather than resolve the conflict, emphasizing that this environment caused secondary damage to the child.
Inflated number of parent complaint calls
According to the communication company records confirmed by the North Jeolla Education Newspaper, the actual number of calls Mr. A made to the school, which was reported as 113 in the broadcast, was only 32. Mr. A revealed that 24 of these were legitimate communications to confirm the fairness and transparency of the child's studies and school operations.
Mr. A refuted that it was unfair to push these into complaints, saying, "All inquiries that could naturally be made as a parent, such as school pre-transfer briefing sessions, child's hospital treatment and early leave, confirmation of absence of homeroom teacher, etc."
Everland water incident
Mr. A also disclosed the water incident that his child experienced during a school field trip in 2024. The child was thirsty while waiting for over two hours to ride a ride, but the school did not properly resolve this. Mr. A criticized, "I asked the school leader to go to where the child was and help, but no action was taken for two hours," pointing out that this was a case that seriously threatened the child's health and safety.
Superintendent Seo Geo-seok's proxy indictment against Parent A exacerbates conflict
It can be seen that Superintendent Seo Geo-seok's proxy indictment and the pressure from the North Jeolla Teachers' Union have rather spread the conflict. Since Parent A criticized it as an attempt to obstruct the legitimate exercise of parental rights and announced his position by providing specific evidence for each issue, the related legal dispute is expected to continue for a long time.
