2014년 프란치스코 교황 방한 당시 ‘옻칠 교황 의자’를 제작해 세계적 주목을 받았던 김영준 작가의 강연이 전주에서 열린다.

(재)전주문화재단(대표이사 최락기)은 전통 공예의 미학과 현대적 감각을 아우르는 특별한 문화행사로, 전시 『천년의 빛, 어보를 품다』와 연계한 ‘김영준 작가와의 대화’를 11일 어진박물관 지하 1층 열린마당에서 개최한다.

이번 행사는 조선왕조의 권위를 상징하는 어보(御寶)를 나전칠기 기법으로 재해석한 전시와 연계, 세계적으로 인정받는 공예가 김영준 작가의 예술 세계를 직접 듣고 만날 수 있는 귀중한 자리로 마련됐다. 전통 공예의 계승과 현대화를 주제로 다양한 문화예술계 인사와 협력기관 관계자 30여 명이 참석할 예정이다.

『천년의 빛, 어보를 품다』 전시는 두 가지 테마로 구성된다. 첫 번째는 ‘임금님장’이라는 주제로 어보를 나전칠기 형태로 구현한 전시(4.24.~8.31.), 두 번째는 전통기술을 현대적으로 재해석해 세계적으로 주목받은 김 작가의 대표작을 소개하는 기획전(7.1.~7.10.)이다.

‘김영준 작가와의 대화’는 사회자의 개회 및 내빈 소개를 시작으로, 전주시장의 환영사, 송광사 법진 주지스님의 축사, 김영준나전미술관 심수지 관장의 작가 이력 소개와 전시 해설, 이어 김 작가의 주제 강연 「천년의 빛, 미래를 품다」 및 질의응답 순으로 진행된다.

김 작가는 2014년 프란치스코 교황 방한 당시 ‘옻칠 교황 의자’를 제작해 세계적 주목을 받았으며, 2009년에는 스티브 잡스의 아이폰 케이스 제작으로 화제를 모았다. 앞서 2008년에는 빌 게이츠가 이명박 전 대통령에게 선물할 X-BOX를 의뢰한 일화로도 잘 알려져 있다.

그의 작품은 빌 게이츠, 힐러리 클린턴, 워렌 버핏 등 세계 30개국 정상에게 소장될 만큼 예술성과 상징성을 인정받고 있으며, 전통 예술에 머물던 나전칠기를 휴대폰, 화장품 케이스, 호텔 인테리어, 고급 차량, 유람선, 항공기 일등석 등 다양한 분야로 확장해왔다.

2024년에는 CNN 『Great Big Story』에 출연했으며, 2022년에는 한-이탈리아 공동 다큐멘터리의 주인공으로 등장하기도 했다. 주요 전시 이력으로는 캐나다 한국문화원 개원 초대 개인전(2016), 평창 비엔날레 초대작가(2015), 주영 한국문화원 상설전, 봉은사 초대전 등이 있다.

최락기 전주문화재단 대표이사는 “전통의 깊이를 지닌 나전칠기라는 소재가 세계적 예술 언어로 다시 태어나는 과정을 시민과 함께 나누고자 이번 자리를 마련했다”며 “지역 공예문화의 위상을 높이는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Renowned artist Kim Young-jun, who gained worldwide attention for creating the "Lacquered Papal Chair" during Pope Francis's visit to Korea in 2014, will be giving a lecture in Jeonju.

The Jeonju Cultural Foundation (CEO Choi Rak-gi) is organizing a special cultural event that combines the aesthetics of traditional crafts with a modern sensibility. The event, titled "Dialogue with Artist Kim Young-jun," will be held on the 11th at the open courtyard on the basement floor of the Eojin Museum, in connection with the exhibition "The Light of a Thousand Years, Embracing the Royal Treasures."

This event, which will feature a reinterpretation of the royal treasures symbolizing the authority of the Joseon Dynasty using the traditional lacquerware technique, provides a valuable opportunity to directly experience the artistic world of Kim Young-jun, a globally recognized craftsman. The event, focusing on the succession and modernization of traditional crafts, is expected to be attended by around 30 figures from the cultural and arts industry and collaborating organizations.

The exhibition "The Light of a Thousand Years, Embracing the Royal Treasures" is divided into two themes. The first theme, "The King's Table," showcases the royal treasures in the form of lacquerware (April 24 - August 31), while the second theme introduces the representative works of Kim, who has gained global recognition for reinterpreting traditional techniques in a modern context (July 1 - July 10).

The "Dialogue with Artist Kim Young-jun" will begin with an introduction by the host and guests, followed by a welcome speech from the Mayor of Jeonju, a congratulatory message from Ven. Songgwangsa Abbot, an introduction to Kim Young-jun's artistic background and exhibition explanation by Director Shim Su-ji of the Kim Young-jun Lacquer Art Museum. This will be followed by Kim's keynote speech on the theme "The Light of a Thousand Years, Embracing the Future" and a question-and-answer session.

Kim gained global attention for creating the "Lacquered Papal Chair" during Pope Francis's visit in 2014 and garnered fame for designing iPhone cases for Steve Jobs in 2009. In 2008, he was also known for creating an X-BOX console requested as a gift for former President Lee Myung-bak from Bill Gates.

His works have been recognized for their artistic and symbolic value, being collected by world leaders from 30 countries such as Bill Gates, Hillary Clinton, and Warren Buffet. He has expanded the traditional art of lacquerware, which was limited to traditional arts, into various fields such as mobile phones, cosmetics cases, hotel interiors, luxury vehicles, cruise ships, and first-class cabins on airplanes.

In 2024, he appeared on CNN's "Great Big Story," and in 2022, he was featured as the protagonist in a joint Korean-Italian documentary. Some of his major exhibition experiences include a solo exhibition at the opening of the Korean Cultural Center in Canada (2016), being the invited artist at the PyeongChang Biennale (2015), and solo exhibitions at the Korean Cultural Center in New York and an invited exhibition at Bongeunsa Temple.

Choi Rak-gi, CEO of the Jeonju Cultural Foundation, stated, "We have organized this event to share with the citizens the process of the material deeply rooted in tradition, such as lacquerware, being reborn as a global artistic language," adding, "It will be an opportunity to elevate the status of regional craft culture."
