서양화가 조헌의 《지각된 풍경》이 22일부터 6월 1일까지 서울 종로구에 위치한 전북도립미술관 서울분관에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 오랜 시간 회화의 물성과 행위, 감각의 교차에 주목하며 제작한 조헌 작가의 평면 회화 연작을 선보이는 자리다.

최근 환경과 풍경에서 오는 사유에 주목해 온 그는 《징후적 풍경》, 《느낌의 무게》 등 지난 개인전을 통해서 ‘풍경’을 보는 감각의 층위를 확장하고, 회화라는 매체 안에서 시간과 감정의 흔적을 어떻게 지각할 수 있을지를 탐색해 왔다. 이번 전시에서는 원형적 시간관을 토대로 지난날의 탐구를 확장한다.

조헌 작가는 이번 전시에서 각각 인간의 욕망과 사유를 주제로 한 ‘바벨(Babel)’시리즈와 ‘말러(Mahler)의 바다’시리즈를 선보인다. 폐허의 이미지로 묘사된 <바벨>은 파괴와 고립을 의미한다. 최근 세계 곳곳에서 벌어지는 전쟁을 통해 인간의 꺼지지 않는 욕망과 인간성의 피폐와 말살을 보게 된다고 하며, 인간에 대한 신의 징벌을 상징하는 성경 속 바벨탑으로 구현했다. 동시에 “혼란 속에서도 인간 존재의 숭고함과 필멸성은 유지된다”고 말하며, 비관을 초월한 듯한 수평선의 장엄함을 화면에 담았다. 구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860~1911)의 음악에서 영감을 받은 <말러의 바다>는 공간적으로 우주와 만나는 경계선을 이루는 바다의 이미지를 통해 깊은 사유를 불러일으키고자 한다.

이처럼 욕망에 의한 폭력과 대립, 그리고 숭고함과 필멸성에 대한 사유를 특유의 표현 방식으로 풀어내어 한 공간에서 만나볼 수 있다. 작가는 “사라지지 않고, 무엇인가로 연결되어 있는 것, 그 힘을 느낌으로써 사유와 영감을 제공받는 것”이라고 전하며, 결국 감정과 사유를 다른 타인과 공유할 수 있는 ‘경험적 연결성’에서 예술을 생각하게 된다고 말한다. 그는 이번 전시를 통해 많은 관람객을 만나며 공감과 사유의 영역을 더욱 확장하기를 기대한다고 덧붙였다.

조헌 작가는 원광대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업한 후 《징후적 풍경》(2023), 《느낌의 무게》(2021) 등 22회의 개인전을 열었고, 《두터움의 미학》(2023), 《전북의 불꽃》(2022), 《하늘 땅 사람》(2018) 등 200여 회의 단체전에 참여했다. 2011년 전주시예술상, 2006년 광주 신세계미술제, 2005년 전라미술상을 수상한 바 있으며, 현재 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 정부미술은행, 서울시립미술관, 전북도립미술관, 전주지방법원 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

전북도립미술관은 동시대 전북미술의 실험성과 조형적 깊이를 서울 및 수도권 지역의 관람객들과 공유하는 플랫폼이 되고자 서울분관을 운영하고 있다. 전년도에 대관 공모를 통해 개별 전시를 선정하며, 작가와 평론가를 연결하는 비평 매칭 프로그램을 지원한다. 또한 대관 전시가 모두 종료된 이후에는 한 해 동안 참여한 전시를 아카이빙한 연감 도록을 발간할 예정이다. 전시기간 중 휴관일인 월요일을 제외한 화요일부터 일요일까지 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 관람할 수 있다. 전시 관람료는 무료.

"Perceived Landscape" by Western painter Joheon will be exhibited at the Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art Seoul Branch located in Jongno-gu, Seoul from the 22nd of the month until June 1st. This exhibition showcases a series of flat paintings by artist Joheon, focusing on the essence and actions of painting, and the intersection of senses.

Recently, Joheon has been paying attention to the thoughts arising from the environment and landscapes. Through previous solo exhibitions such as "Significant Landscape" and "Weight of Sensation," he has expanded the layers of perception of 'landscapes' within the medium of painting, exploring how traces of time and emotions can be perceived within painting. In this exhibition, he expands his exploration of past investigations based on a cyclical view of time.

In this exhibition, Joheon presents the "Babel" series and the "Mahler's Sea" series, each themed around human desires and thoughts. The image of "Babel," depicted as ruins, symbolizes destruction and isolation. He expresses that through the wars happening worldwide, he witnesses the relentless desires of humans and the degradation and destruction of humanity, symbolizing the punishment of God towards humans through the biblical Babel Tower. At the same time, he conveys the sublimity of human existence and mortality in the midst of chaos, capturing the grandeur of the horizon that transcends pessimism on the canvas. Inspired by the music of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), "Mahler's Sea" aims to evoke deep thoughts through the image of the sea forming a boundary line meeting space and the universe.

Through his unique expression, Joheon unfolds violence and confrontation driven by desires, as well as thoughts on sublimity and mortality, allowing viewers to encounter them in one space. The artist states, "Feeling the power of something that does not disappear and is connected, receiving thoughts and inspiration through feelings," and ultimately thinks of art in the 'experiential connectivity' where emotions and thoughts can be shared with others. He expressed his hope to meet many viewers through this exhibition and further expand the realms of empathy and thought.

Joheon, who graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Wonkwang University's College of Fine Arts, has held 22 solo exhibitions, including "Significant Landscape" (2023) and "Weight of Sensation" (2021), and participated in over 200 group exhibitions such as "Aesthetics of Thickness" (2023), "Flames of Jeonbuk" (2022), and "Sky Earth People" (2018). He has received awards such as the Jeonju City Art Award in 2011, the Gwangju Shinsegae Art Festival in 2006, and the Jeolla Art Award in 2005. His works are currently held in institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Government Art Bank, Seoul Museum of Art, Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art, and Jeonju District Court.

The Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art operates its Seoul Branch to share the experimental nature and formal depth of contemporary Jeonbuk art with viewers in Seoul and the metropolitan area. Through a call for exhibition proposals last year, they selected individual exhibitions and support a critical matching program connecting artists and critics. After all rental exhibitions are completed, they plan to publish an annual archive documenting the exhibitions participated in for a year. The exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Mondays, which are closed. Admission to the exhibition is free.
