전주시는 국가유산청이 1956년 완공된 후 현재까지 천주교 전주교구 주교좌본당으로 사용 중인 전주 중앙성당을 국가등록문화유산으로 등록 예고했다고 7일 밝혔다.
시는 중앙성당이 국가등록문화유산으로 최종 등록되면, 체계적이고 효율적인 보존·관리 및 활용을 위해 국가유산청과의 협의 과정을 거쳐 종합정비계획을 수립할 예정이다.
문화유산의 원형 보존에 중점을 둬 추진될 종합정비계획은 학술연구 및 고증을 바탕으로 문화유산의 진정성 및 가치를 유지하고, 보존과 활용이 합리적 조화를 이룰 수 있도록 수립된다.
시는 이러한 정비계획이 국가유산청의 승인을 거쳐 연차별 시행계획을 수립하게 되면 이를 근거로 필요한 예산을 확보해 갈 방침이다.
